Since its formation, VSBIT has been offering insurance and risk management programs. In 1978, VSBIT began by offering an Unemployment Insurance Program to member school districts. This program was created to help school districts budget for the expense of unemployment benefits and reduce the cost by "pooling" the overall financial risk among participating school districts.
VSBIT's philosophy concerning its insurance programs starts with the premise that it will only offer programs that can truly assist member school districts. Over the years, on several occasions, VSBIT has opened or closed the door to new or existing programs.
Currently, VSBIT offers school districts an Unemployment Program and a Multi-Line Program, which provides property, casualty and workers compensation. Additionally, health, dental and long term Disability and life are offered through the Vermont Education Health Initiative (VEHI), which is jointly managed by VSBIT and the Vermont-NEA.
